Why your website isn't showing up on Google — the 5 most common reasons
"We have a website — why can't anyone find us?" We hear this question more than any other. The good news — it almost always comes down to the same five causes, and none of them is magic. Here's the honest diagnosis, from the five-minute fix to the uncomfortable truth.

Google doesn't show the best website — it shows the one it knows, can read, and considers the most fitting answer. If yours isn't showing up, it's stuck at one of these five points. Let's go through them in the order you should check.
1. Google doesn't know your website exists
The most common and fastest-checked reason. Type into Google: site:yourdomain.com. If nothing appears, your website is not in the index — for Google, it simply doesn't exist. Typical causes: the site was never registered with Google Search Console, there's no sitemap — or the classic: a "noindex" tag left over from development that actively locks Google out. Annoying, but the best news in this article: fixed in an afternoon.
2. Your website is technically invisible
Google visits your site like a very impatient customer on an old phone. If it loads too slowly, doesn't work properly on mobile, or lacks the padlock (HTTPS), Google ranks it down — no matter how good the content is. A quick self-test: open your website on your own phone using mobile data. If you're waiting, Google isn't.

3. Your content doesn't answer a single search query
The most underrated reason. "Welcome to our homepage" ranks for nothing, because nobody searches for it. Your customers type concrete questions: "emergency electrician Leeds", "teeth cleaning cost", "physiotherapy back pain". If your services aren't spelled out anywhere on the site — with their own pages, real descriptions, your location — Google can't match you to any of those searches.
Google doesn't sell websites. Google answers questions. If you don't answer a question, you don't get shown.
4. You're missing the local signals
For local searches ("hairdresser near me"), Google leans heavily on the Google Business Profile — plus consistent business details across the web. A maintained profile with correct hours, photos and answered reviews often does more for local visibility than any change to the website itself. The linked guide shows how to set it up properly.
5. The competition is (still) stronger
The uncomfortable truth to finish. Google trusts established sites more. Age, content, mentions — these are trust points that only build over months. A new website rarely lands at the top right away, even when everything is done right. The honest promise is "measurably more visible" — anyone guaranteeing you "position 1" is a red flag, not an offer.
The honest order
Check in this order: index (reason 1, five minutes), tech (reason 2, days), content (reason 3, weeks), profile (reason 4, an afternoon), patience plus continuous content (reason 5, months). What a website costs that gets all of this right from day one is covered in the honest pricing guide — and in the free intro call we'll tell you exactly which of the five points is holding your website back. Even if the answer is: none of the big ones.
